We’re excited to announce Scanner:Library – a full instrument collaboration with the artist Scanner (Robin Rimbaud).
Scanner produced a sound pack for Geosonics II some years ago, and since then we have stayed in touch, and the idea of a full instrument has been under discussion for a few years.
Read MoreRobin wanted to utilise his extensive archive on tape; cassettes featuring all kinds of sonic material spanning his entire 40 year career. We worked with him to develop an instrument to exploit this material, and we quickly discovered that Robin had very clear, singular ideas about how this should be. He wanted it to be very basic and stripped down; to force the user to work in a different way, with combinations of sounds being the focus.
So we removed nearly all the controls, and only put them back if essential, or if they gave the instrument a unique character. A 2 stage envelope, a low-pass filter, some tape wow, and crucially -a randomise button. The latter, if held down with the alt key, will randomise all 3 sample modules in the instrument, instantly throwing up unexpected soundscapes from a possible range of 10 million – a number we checked 4 times because it seemed impossible.
The resulting instrument is very simple and incredibly addictive to explore, and takes one back to a simpler way of working with sound.

Impulse responses from effects sources are also included, with tape echo generated by a Revox reel‑to‑reel, Moogerfooger BBDs, and spring reverbs too. This is undeniably a comprehensive collection of modular sounds, which works incredibly elegantly within the SC Polarity engine. The granular element supplies a unique dimension.”
